My cat and I are enjoying a beautiful evening on the front porch when she spota a wasp on the floor next to me doing something, maybe eating a bug. She looks intently at the wasp and I, becoming aware of her intense interest, pay attention also. She approaches to a few inches while I watch from several yards away. The wasp, possibly, eats whatever it is. I don't know because I don't want to destroy the three-way dynamic. We are all intent on what we are doing- the wasp, the cat, the human.
The wasp finishes and flies away.
My cat stops paying attention and moves away.
I ask myself how different were all our experiences?
How profoundly different?
The wasp has flown away.
The cat is asleep now in the sun.
And I ponder.
